COP-12 Nairobi - November 2006

What happened in Nairobi in November 2006?

In November of 2006, Kenya was the site of the 12th annual Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Occurring simultaneously was the 2nd annual Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Kyoto Protocol.  At these meetings, the national representatives of the countries party to the agreements discussed their efforts to meet the established emissions reduction targets and proposed future commitments.  In addition, many civil society groups, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and industry representatives attended the events to monitor their progress and lobby for more aggressive (or less aggressive in the case of industry) international action.  Current emissions reduction commitments established by the Kyoto Protocol are set to terminate in 2012, so a major topic of this meeting was how to designate commitments for post-2012.
