The USW is the largest private sector union in both Canada and North America with more than 225,000 members in Canada and more than 800,000 members continent-wide. The USW is Canada's most diverse union, representing men and women working in every sector of the economy.
Our members work in nearly every industry and in every job imaginable, in all regions of the country. We work in call centres and credit unions, mines and manufacturing plants, offices and oil refineries, restaurants and rubber plants, sawmills and steel mills and security companies. We work in nursing homes, legal clinics, social agencies and universities. The USW stands for unity and strength for workers.
The United Steelworkers and Environmental Defence created Blue Green Canada and are making a real impact in advocating for green jobs, a sustainable economy and environmental protection. Blue Green Canada is a strategic alliance between the United Steelworkers and Environmental Defence to advocate for working people and the environment in key areas of global trade, the use of toxic chemicals in commercial activity, the creation of green manufacturing jobs and in the development of strategies to address climate change.
The USW is working to create safe and healthy workplaces. Environmental Defence is working to protect the environment and human health. Blue Green Canada combines these efforts to fight for green jobs.
Blue Green Canada is finding solutions:
- Encouraging all levels of government to invest in clean renewable energy and good green jobs.
- Organizing for local procurement standards to create markets for local suppliers.
- Building partnerships with community members to support the transition to a greener economy.
