AEHMS
The society was established in 1989 to promote holistic, ecosystemic, and integrated initiatives for the conservation and management of global aquatic resources.
Our Mission:
* To promote and develop the concept of ecosystem health for the protection, conservation, and sustainable management of global aquatic resources
* To encourage international, interdisciplinary, and crosssectoral communication and collaboration among scientists, universities, governments, industry, and public sectors for the development of practices and measures for aquatic ecosystem health
* To utilize ecosystem health concepts and practices in relation to remediation and restoration of stressed aquatic ecosystems
* To coalesce and disseminate information and provide training on the concept of aquatic ecosystem health
Our Objectives:
* To promote an understanding of the natural functioning of aquatic ecosystems; the nature of ecosystem health; the requirements for the sustainablity of aquatic resources; and the remediation, healing, recovery, and restoration of stressed environments
* To encourage ecosystemic, integrated, multitrophic, multidisciplinary, approaches to understanding and managing aquatic ecosystems
* To advocate the development of new approaches, methods, and technologies for the practice of aquatic ecosystem health and restoration
* To promote international cooperation and communication on aquatic ecosystem health through the establishment of international chapters in various countries
* To disseminate information on ecosystem health through publications, newsletters, conferences, symposia, ecoforums, workshops, etc.
Synopsis:
* To focus on aquatic ecosystem health (marine, freshwater, estuarine):
Ecosystem health assessment at structural, ultrastructural, functional and molecular levels Integrated, multitrophic and multidisciplinary approaches including physical, chemical, biological, and statistical evaluations Trophic interactions, food web dynamics/alterations, and carbon fixation pathways.
* To promote an understanding of the functioning of stressed ecosystems, the remediation and restoration:
Ecosystem management and rest oration of stressed ecosystems Impact of contaminants, nutrients, exotic biota, habitat change, and other stresses Development of suitable programs for the healing, remediation, and recovery of ecosystems Promotion of appropriate remedial action plans for the healing, remediation, and recovery of ecosystems.
* To encourage international, interdisciplinary, and crosssectorial). communication on ecosystem health and recovery:
Exchange of scientific information and integration of multidisciplinary expertise among government, academia, business and public sectors. International scientific cooperation and networking on global project technology transfer/exchange, and application of environmental law International workshops, symposia and conferences. International scientific journal on aquatic ecosystem health and management, and special publications, as needed.
