Submission by the Climate Action Network (CAN) on cooperative sectoral approaches and sector-specific actions: emissions from international aviation and maritime transport

Background:

International aviation and maritime transport are major and fast‐growing sources of greenhouse gas emissions, while being under‐taxed from an environmental perspective.  Yet there is high potential to reduce those emissions globally, beyond the energy efficiency measures developed and considered under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).  Carbon pricing would be an effective means of addressing this situation and can be applied fairly and equitably. In addition, it could raise considerable funds to support climate action in developing countries, and in the maritime and aviation sectors.

CAN Submission - Views on new market-based mechanisms - Feb 2011

CAN welcomes the opportunity to respond to the invitation to present views on the establishment of new market-based mechanisms (decision -/CP.16, paragraphs 80-82).

CAN strongly believes that any new market-based mechanisms must take into account and build upon the lessons learned from the operation of existing market-based mechanisms during the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol to ensure the environmental integrity of any new mechanisms as well as the overall UNFCCC regime.

Solutions Through Synergies : REDD and Sectoral Approaches - 2009

In the international climate negotiations leading up to a Copenhagen agreement, different topics are often discussed separately and with specialized experts. This implies that synergies between concepts are sometimes not identified. two issues that receive particular attention in the negotiations are “reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation” in developing countries (reDD) and “sectoral approaches”. With this report, we want to close the gap between reDD and sectoral approaches, explore synergies where they exist and discuss how they can be used. We identify ways in which positive aspects and advances on particular issues in the separate tracks can support the broader discussion on the Copenhagen “package” in general. We provide recommendations on how to find pragmatic, realistic ways to use these synergies to advance the international climate negotiations up to and after Copenhagen
