Michael Carr - Finance Manager

The Finance Manager works with the Deputy Director and the Head of Operations to ensure routine financial management tasks are carried out by developing and following internal financial management procedures, keeping accounting up-to-date, and ensuring that all donor requirements are met.

About Michael

Started with CAN in January 2017.

Michael’s initial work experience was in the private sector as an International Management Trainee at Enterprise Holdings and in the financial sector at Wells Fargo Financial and Commerzbank AG in the United States and Germany. During his Master’s in Germany, he joined the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) in South Africa and managed projects on green economy development in emerging markets, productive uses of distributed energy and access to agricultural finance. More recently, he promoted sustainable access to modern renewable energy services with GIZ in Ethiopia.

Michael holds a Master’s in Economics and a Dual-Bachelor’s in Finance and German from the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena and The Ohio State University.

When not at work, he enjoys traveling, playing guitar, physical fitness/yoga, and sports. He speaks fluent German and English and is continuing to develop his Spanish. His favorite animal is the penguin –his spirit animal is the lion.

He is excited to be able to apply his expertise to support global climate protection and sustainable development efforts worldwide.

Currently, he works out of Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

Jana Merkelbach - Head of Network Development and Outreach

The Head of Network Development and Outreach coordinates the implementation of the CAN International Secretariat’s program and activities linked to regional and national nodes (as well as members and partners as appropriate) in their work on renewable energy, long-term strategies and other strategic priorities.

About Jana

Jana spent her professional life working for civil society organisations at local, national and international level. Before joining CAN, she worked for the International Civil Society Centre, as well as a local child support NGO in Namibia and Amnesty International Germany. Jana has broad experience in programme development and implementation, in capacity development as well as in coordinating international partnerships and networks. In her prior roles she worked on thematic issues such as driving transformational change, climate change, human rights, Post 2015 and shrinking civic space.

Jana holds a Bachelor's in Politics and Public Administration and a Master's in Children's Rights. She studied at the University of Constance, the Institut d'Études Politiques in Aix-en-Provence and the Free University of Berlin.

Being passionate about working for a global transition towards a sustainable, equitable and just world, Jana is excited to work for CAN, a network that brings together organisations from across the globe to achieve the protection of the global climate in a manner that promotes equity and social justice between people. Jana is particularly passionate about mobilising for a transition to 100% renewable energy as an effective approach addressing environmental sustainability and social justice together.

Stephan Singer - Senior Advisor Global Energy Policies

The Senior Advisor Global Energy Policies works with the CAN members and external influential institutions such as IEA, IRENA and the IPCC on analysis of implementation of and advocacy for clean energy policy that is based on 100% renewables and strong energy efficiency for all people by mid-century and critique on governments and institutions that oppose that necessary target for meeting the ultimate objectives of both, the Paris treaty and the Sustainable Development Goals. The position supports for CAN international Initiatives such as REN21 and the African Renewable Energy Initiative. The Chief Advisor leads work in CAN secretariat on the scientific work for policies to foster the 1.5 C objective and address critically the plethora of challenges posed by geoengineering. 

About Stephan

Dr Stephan Singer has spent the last 23 years with WWF Germany, WWF Europe and WWF International. His last role, starting in 2009, was ‘Director Global Energy Policy’.

Stephan has a PhD in soil physics on carbon and nitrogen dynamics in poverished Indian soils. Before joining WWF he was a strong anti-nuclear activist in Germany, a journalist, and he also worked for four years for GIZ in India and Kenya on poverty alleviation with subsistence farming in semi-arid tropics.

Stephan has been driving the global move to 100% renewables in WWF for the past few years. He is a strong supporter of a Just and Fair Transition to 100% Renewables in all countries, coupled with significant public and private financial shifts away from fossil fuels and nuclear, towards a much more equitable world.

His work includes providing support and advise to CAN member organisations on renewable energy expansion in all countries, which is a prerequisite staying below 1.5 degree C.

Stephan is a regular and invited peer-reviewer of the annual IEA World Energy Outlook, a regular CSO reviewer of some of the IPCC work (WG III, mitigation), and chairperson of the Renewable Grid Initiative (RGI) in Europe. He will be working from Brussels where he lives with his family.

Dharini Parthasarathy - Senior Communications Officer

The Senior Communications Officer is responsible for all media and strategic communications related to the climate policy and advocacy in CAN. The role leads on drafting communications strategies and developing shared messaging and narratives that align the network across various climate fora like UNFCCC, the IPCC, the Green Climate Fund and other mulilateral fora such as G20 and the G7. This position organises CAN communication meetings virtual and face-face, regular press briefings, webinars, trainings and strategy meetings and coordinates media requests for CAN members. This role also helps co-facilitate the 'Croissant Conspiracy' Communications Group and the CAN Communications Working Group.

About Dharini

Dharini has 11 years experience in journalism and strategic communications. She's worked with the Food and Agriculture Organization, UN,  and more recently with the CGIAR's Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Research Programme (hosted in the Wageningen University, the Netherlands) as the South Asia Communications Specialist based in New Delhi. Her work has given her insights into how climate change is affecting small-holder farmers in India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and the policy and grassroots changes needed to enable adaptation in the agriculture sector.

Following her postgraduate studies from the University of Vienna, Austria in Global Studies, with a specialisation in international development, she worked for a few years in Brussels, Belgium, first as a Communications and Press trainee at the European Commission and subsequently for an economic policy think tank, Bruegel. Dharini started her career on the news desk for The Hindu

She lives in Bangalore, India.  

Lina Dabbagh - Head of Political Advocacy

The Head of Political Advocacy oversees the work of the team in developing policy positions and coordinating strategic advocacy for the CAN Network both in the UNFCCC and other international fora. This position also supports the network work on the Global Stocktake and the 2018 Facilitative Dialogue and civil society participation and coordinates the Political Coordination Group.

About Lina

Lina Dabbagh joined CAN-International in April 2014. Lina has worked on international climate change policy, mitigation strategies and sustainable development issues for the past five years.

Lina holds a masters degree in Regional Science of Latin America and Politics from the University of Cologne, Germany. During her studies she served as a research fellow at the Wuppertal Climate Change Research Institute, Germany. After her studies, she went to Mexico where she earned a postgraduate diploma in Environmental Economics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and where she worked for WWF-Mexico as Program Development Officer.

Lina has lived in Germany, Syria, Spain and France and decided to settle down in Mexico where she got married. She enjoys walking her dog, cooking vegetarian food and travelling.
